I never seem to have the time!

Updated: May 16, 2020

Do you always feel this way? Looking to start a hobby, but can never never find time? Perhaps I can give you a few tips or make a few suggestions? Read on..

Let me first ask you to keep and open mind and take in what I have to say with a pinch of salt. I know most of us have pretty tightly packed schedules.

That being said, here comes some tough love!

"If it is really important to you, you will find time."

"You never find the time, you have to make the time."

Now, I know these are the often heard cliches, but lets face it there is a bit of truth to it.

Lets take an example of a painting that will take you 2 hours from start to finish, and you want to do this in one week. You can look at it in the following ways:

1. "I want to find two hours where I can just focus on this and get this done". You will probably have to find one day where you have two hours free or two days where you have an hour free each. For most of us, especially if you are in school, college or a parent with young kids, this might as well be a pipe dream!

2. "I want to schedule two hours this weekend to do this painting". I don't know about you, but my weekends seem to fly without me doing anything! I KNOW!! Right!!?

3. "Let me paint for 15-20 minutes every day". This time, you might actually get to finish this painting in a week! 15x7 = 105 minutes. That is an hour and 15 minutes! Small steps to a large project. Divide the painting into segments or sections. Take a break for 15 minutes every day. Perhaps, reduce your netflix time and use that to sketch or paint. Eat your three meals a day 5 minutes faster to get your 15 minutes. Maybe sleep 15 minutes late every day.

Even if it just 5 minutes a day, you are still making progress! We often overestimate what we can achieve in a day and underestimate what is possible in the long term. Trust me even doodling for a minute everyday will improve your skills in the long run. Keep a sheet of paper and a pencil next to you and sketch during your meetings or while day dreaming ;)

Good luck and god speed!
