Pencil? Charcoal?? Pen??...Markers!?! HELP!!!

Updated: May 7, 2020

If you are bamboozled by the unlimited varieties of mediums out in the art world, trust me you are not alone!

Follow this space next week to get unbamboozled! ;)

If you really think about it, EVERYONE of us is a born artist!

The first thing a child writes is not a letter, but a drawing. A child scribbles, and that is the most rudimentary, unadulterated form of art!

What happens after that? Well...life catches up! Everything else becomes more important. We focus on writing and drawing takes a back seat, for the most of us. Well, it is never too late to start right where you left.

One of the biggest hurdles most people have when starting/re starting is where to begin. What materials to use. Honestly, the answer lies in what you are trying to achieve. I think most of us feel the most comfortable using a regular pencil and our feelings are right. Pencil is the ideal tool to get started with drawing no matter what level you are at or even what your goals are! It can be easily erased and you can achieve various levels of lightness or darkness. It might sound counter intuitive, but the secret to become a better painter is by drawing more.

Once you are at a comfortable point with a pencil, charcoals would be the ideal next step. I would like to think of pencil as a very controlled medium, meaning that the artist can control the strokes and lines very well, while charcoal is a very forgiving medium. You can make plenty of mistakes that can be corrected a lot easier than pencil. One might even say that charcoal moves like paint and is one of the best precursor to painting.

Pen and Markers come into play when one has mastered charcoal. You want to become confident and deliberate with your mark making. For obvious reasons, pen and markers are hard to erase and every single stroke matters when using them.

Many artist often use mixed media on their drawings.

In summary, the ideal progression should be:

- Pencil

-Charcoal

-Ink
