So, who are the old masters?

Come, lets take a dive into the world of classical masters and admire the wonderful works they have created!

The word 'Old Master' refers to any painter who worked in Europe or with equivalent skills that painted around the 1800s.

These could be paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures. They were fully trained, worked at their local artist's guild before working independently!

You would have to be drawing and painting for atleast 5000 hours, yes 5000 hours before you were even called an 'artist', during that time!

Of the hundreds if not thousands of old masters, most of us have only heard of probably only 4 or 5 artists and have seen even fewer works!

I am sure we all have heard of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Da vinci painted the world renowned Mona Lisa (also fondly known as La Gioconda) .

La Gioconda

One of Michelangelo's most acclaimed works, remain to be the roof of the Sistine Chapel located in the Vatican City. This is the creation of Adam!

Some other well know or even unknown artists in this lists include Rembrandt, Johannes Vermeer (Girl with the Pearl Earring), Caravaggio (Medusa, Judith and Holfernes, Saint Gerome etc), Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Raphael, Vincent Van Gogh (Starry Night),Giulio Romano, Titian, Hans Holbien.....to name just a handful!

Saint Gerome by Caravaggio! Just look at the depth of colors there!!
