Talent vs Hard Work

Updated: May 16, 2020

If you have ever considered of taking up art as a career or even a serious hobby, I am sure the thought of 'talent' popped into your head.

This bring us to the age old discussion of talent versus hard work. Are artists born or are artists made? Can anyone become good at drawing? Does it take something special to make an amazing artist?

The short answer is, YES. Anyone can become a good artist! Each and everyone of us is a born artist. Obviously this is my own thoughts and are the results of my own experiences.

First and foremost, to become good at anything you need two things: Interest and practice. Same is the case with art. Ever wondered how an artist painted something so beautifully? It is just a result of thousands of hours or practice! Da Vinci himself believed that 'Quantity leads to Quality'. There is also no set age to start drawing. One advantage that younger kids have is that, they will have fresh minds! So they have to unlearn less. The come in with unadulterated minds. On the other hands us adults have to unlearn a few things, get rid of some 'bad' drawing habits, but one advantage we have is that we can process information and learn faster.

So, here we go! Talent plays but a very very minute part. Hard work, time and effort are often the overlooked key to success with anything. Not just art.

Kids especially will give us hints, however subtle they may be as to what interests them. I feel in things like art and music we can encourage them as much as we can and honestly, I have noticed quite a few kids lose the interest midway. But I think they will again pick it up at a later stage when they find the time or the means. Something will trigger them to pick up the hobby that they have long left, as in my own case and experience.
