Why do I draw?

Lately I have been asking some of my fellow artists as well as my teacher, the reason why they draw. Why do I draw? Why does or why did anyone ever draw anything?

Not unlike most kids, I first learnt to draw by watching my father draw. My father was a very good artist and tried his hands at various mediums. I used to sit and pick up the pencils that he was not using and try to draw whatever he was drawing.

The most rudimentary reason why I draw is because I enjoy it and love the feeling that I get when my drawing comes out as expected! To me drawing is therapeutic, meditative and cathartic.

Now lets talk about the philosophical, logical and deeper aspects of drawing. Ever been is a situation where you were asking for directions or had to give directions to the corner store or to the neighborhood grocery store? Do you tell all the streets, turns and intersections or do you find a piece of paper and draw a few lines? Which one do you find easier? Which one do you remember better?

I believe drawing is the most basic human instinct. Give a toddler a piece of chalk for the first time and watch him crawl to a wall and scribble. Humans have expressed their feeling right from the start of time. In fact, we start drawing way before we can even say our first word. Each and every one of us is a born artist! Unfortunately, very few of us keep it alive.

For children drawing can be a fantastic way to express themselves, gain confidence and control their emotions. Drawing teaches one that when you can't figure out a problem, all you need sometimes if to step back...look away and take a breath!

While there is no right or wrong reason to draw, in my honest opinion, one should not draw just with the pure purpose of reproducing something. For me drawing is not about photo realism or making something look like a photograph. If you want something to look like a photograph....well take a photograph. Drawing to me is more about representing what you see and how you see it.

I hope you will find and pursue your reason to draw! Cheers!!
